DOTHAN: The deadline to qualify for Dothan Police Chief was this past Friday. We understand there are as many as 14 to 22 applications.
At this time the City of Dothan has not confirmed the number of applications. With it just closing Friday all data has not been compiled.
UNCONFIRMED OFFICIALLY, we understand there is only one application from within the Dothan Police Department. Again, we do not have that officially confirmed. But we understand Dothan Police Major Steve Parrish is the only person who has applied within the department.
Major Parrish is currently second in command of the Dothan Police Department. The first in command is the Police Chief. Parrish has more than 30 years with the Dothan Police Department, rising in the ranks to the position of Major.
Dothan City Manager Mike West will have Dothan Personnel Department weed through the applications and narrow the field of candidates. He will then conduct interviews. West hopes to have a name to be submitted to the Commission prior to Chief Benton's May 1 departure.
The police chief will be the third time West has made a recomendation to the commission. The first selection West said this was the most important hire he would make during his tenure as City Manager. And boy did he screw that one up. West' selection was out of state and the police department was screwed up after that selection.
West then selected a Dothan raised man as Chief. That was Greg Benton.
Hopefully West will make a selection best for the City of Dothan, which is local. A local person for Chief of Police will have the long term best interest of Dothan at heart. Hopefully the Mayor and Commission will be a good guardian.
