PANAMA CITY — Local businesses claiming recently passed Spring Break ordinances violate their constitutional rights and were designed to target minority visitors have asked that implementation of the laws be put on hold as a lawsuit proceeds through federal court.
The motion, filed Thursday, is the most recent in a series of documents in a federal lawsuit filed on the part of local, pro-Spring Break businesses against the city of Panama City Beach. That lawsuit claims city officials violated several constitutional rights by adopting laws to “tone down” the annual celebration, and that those laws were racially motivated. However, city officials recently have responded by denying the allegations and saying the laws were designed to promote health and safety of citizens and visitors.
The city is now asking the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida to dismiss the lawsuit all together.
