HOUSTON COUNTY: The Houston – Love Memorial Library Board of Directors thumbed their noses at two successful Dothan businessman on Tuesday.
The Houston – Love Memorial Library Board voted to tear down the building that housed the Library. The very people they came to in efforts to raise money to build a new Library, the board snubbed them.
The board, Chairman Steve Roy, Cindy Aman, Sherri Chason, James Etheridge, Vince Edge, Ted Feagin, Ted Hall, Cindy Hollis, Michael Jackson, Gloria Jeffcoat, Edna McLeod, Harrison Morris, Charles Owens, Bob Thenue, and Mary Alice Veale.
Dothan businessman Alan Clark and Dothan Attorney Keith Givens both attended the Library Board Meeting and asked the board to preserve the history of Dothan by not tearing down the old Library building. The Board said they had demolition contracts already in place. Both Clark and Givens offered to pay the demolition fee to stop it. The board rejected their plea.
Alan Clark and DSI, Clark’s company founded by his dad, A.B. Clark in 1969, employs over 3,000 persons. The company, DSI has it’s headquarters in Dothan. Clark has taken several old houses in the area behind Sear’s and renovated those houses making the DSI complex. Clark is one that has put his money where his mouth is.
Keith Givens and Sam Cherry has spent a lot of bucks in downtown Dothan buildings. The anchor is the Cherry and Irwin law firm building at Oates and Main Street. Givens and Cherry renovated the buildings at Justice
park and the park itself. Givens has also renovated the old Southtrust Bank building at Foster and Main and The Grand on North Foster. Again, they have put their money where their mouths are at.
The Library Board used City of Dothan and Houston County taxpayer funds to build the Library. Not just one, but two. A person on the original committee said the demolition of the old building was not part of the original plans.
Betty Forbus, the Director of Houston – Love Library, was quoted as saying the contracts to tear down the existing building were already in place. That was solved by Clark and Givens.
But the Library Board: Steve Roy, Cindy Aman, Sherri Chason, James Etheridge, Vince Edge, Ted Feagin, Ted Hall, Cindy Hollis, Michael Jackson, Gloria Jeffcoat, Edna McLeod, Harrison Morris, Charles Owens, Bob Thenue, and Mary Alice Veale, SORRY TO ALL OF THOSE WHO COME AFTER, these people have destroyed history in Dothan and Houston County.
