DOTHAN: It was Saturday morning and parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles flocked to the ball park for opening ceremonies of the Dixie Youth Baseball season opening.
Kids were everywhere and busy. Individual and team pictures were being made. Games were being played. From T-ball on up.
I was at Eastgate Park. A great crowd and managed for the most part by adults and parents.
One parent, Jerry Richard was at a post that he has been at for the past 30 years. In concession.
Before Eastgate Park Jerry has been actively involved in the youth baseball and concession area. On Opening day the grill is fired up and he is fighting smoke from cooking hamburgers. And Jerry's children are grown but he is still involved.
The youth baseball program is managed by the parent's association. The concession is managed by the parents. The profits goes to run aspects of the youth baseball program. The Dixie Youth sends the kids to tournaments and not the City of Dothan.
Dothan Commissioners kicked the idea around letting outside vendors come into the ballpark for concessions. This is something that will hurt the program because currently it is managed by volunteers and the profits go back into the program.
Saturday was a fun day. And I look forward to the season.
