DOTHAN - HOUSTON COUNTY:   Today members of the Dothan - Houston County E-911 Board moved one step closer to a single 911 board.

Currently the board is comprised of the Dothan Mayor, all Dothan Commissioners and two Houston County Commissioners. In addition, there is a 911 Advisory Committee which is made up of the Dothan Police Chief, Dothan Fire Chief, Houston County Sheriff, Houston County Volunteer Fire Association, Houston County Volunteer EMS, Pilcher's Ambulance, Dothan - Houston County Emergency Management, Dothan Public Works, Dothan Information Technology representatives.

The Advisory Board meets and makes recommendations and the board normally approves whatever is recommended.

A goal has been to consolidate into one board. Former Dothan Commissioner turned State Representative Paul Lee demanded the board be made up of 70% appointments from the City of Dothan and 30% appointments from Houston County. Lee argued that 70% of the money comes from inside the city limits of Dothan and 30% of the money from outside of the city limits of Dothan.

The argument to Lee was, calling 911 is not about money but the same level of service no matter if you called from Ashford or downtown Dothan. Lee refused to allow an equal appointment or 51/49, but demanded 70/30. It was argued to Lee that 911 is not about territory but about emergency aid dispatched no matter where you are. Again, Lee demanded 70/30 appointments with the City of Dothan having the majority.

Today the board voted on legislation to change the board. There will be 4 mandatory appointments being Dothan Police Chief or designee, Dothan Fire Chief or designee, Houston County Sheriff or designee, Houston County Volunteer Fire or designee. Then 5 appointments to the board with Dothan Commission making 4 of the 5 appointments and the Houston County Commission making one of the appointments.

In the end, the City of Dothan will have 6 appointments to the board ( 2 of which are mandatory  Dothan Police and Fire Chief's ) and Houston County will have 3 appointments ( 2 of which are mandatory Sheriff/Volunteer Fire ).

The legislation will be advertised for 4 consecutive weeks and then to the Alabama Legislature for approval.

Once passed Dothan and Houston County Commission's will make their appointments and off to one board.
