(DOTHAN, ALABAMA) – Stephen Evans, a Dothan financial consultant, today announced he will be a candidate for the Alabama Public Service Commission, Place 1, in the June 2010 Republican primary. Democrat Commissioner Jan Cook, who has served there since 1991, currently occupies that seat.

“I am running to raise public awareness about the Public Service Commission and make it more accountable to the voters,” Mr. Evans said. “This office is one that generates little public interest because so few people know what its functions and responsibilities are, and I plan to change that,” he added.

“As a representative of the people, I feel it is the duty of a PSC commissioner to do more lobbying in Washington on national utility issues, such as opposing cap-and-trade legislation,” Evans commented.  “Such legislation would lead to higher electric rates and fewer jobs in Alabama’s coal industry,” he concluded.

Stephen Evans was raised in Childersburg and Sylacauga where his father was a textile worker. When the textile industry began to lose jobs, the Evans family moved to Dothan where his father was retrained in aircraft maintenance. Mr. Evans attended Dothan High School and the University of Alabama. In 2008, Stephen married Lori Beth Bristow, a Dothan native.

Mr. Evans is employed with the southeast office of 401-K Advisors, a California-based company. He is a retirement plan advisor, advising both corporations and participants.  His office is the advisor to over 20 companies in eight states, representing thousands of employees.

The Alabama Public Commission Public Service Commission is a body of three elected members, which includes a president and two associate commissioners, each elected to four-year at-large terms. The PSC serves as a regulatory body that monitors such industries as utilities, for-hire carriers, energy, and telecommunications.
