The Dothan Fire Department wants to do their part with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Instead of donating the money to two of their fire department families, the families asked that it go to a foundation that would reach more children than Molly Johnson and Morgan Hasty.
"They're our inspiration to our members who are always looking for opportunities to always reach out and help and make it about someone else,” said Fire Marshal Chris Etheredge. “t's about Morgan and Molly and all of the other families that are dealing with this. 150 new cases of pediatric cancer in our state every year and we want to change that."
The proceeds raised from 'Going for the Gold' will go to the Development Therapeutic Program, a cutting edge research foundation at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
The main goal of the foundation is to improve the cure rate and decrease the immediate side effects experience by children undergoing chemo.
"We've seen the need,” said Morgan's mother Mitzi Hasty. “We know that, that is a need and I know in the past the different fundraisers that they've had have been wonderful and we're very blessed by those, but we see the need and we know they don't have the funds. There is research to be done and they need money to do the research."
According to statistics, less than four cents for every dollar donated to cancer goes to pediatric cancer research.
