"Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better."
— Harry Truman
Dothan, Alabama has certainly progressed throughout the years, and one of the greatest periods of economic growth for the city was between 1964-1968. Under the leadership of the Executive Economic Developer with the Dothan Chamber of Commerce, Larry Register, the city not only prospered, but also laid the groundwork for incredible growth and the infrastructural improvements that followed.
Much of this economic prosperity was due to the hard work and diligence of private individuals in the community, who were business leaders in Dothan during this time. As a way to honor these businessmen, the names of seven of Dothan’s economic leaders during the mid-to-late 1960’s will be inscribed in the Dothan Leadership Monument on June 18, 2015.
The Dothan Leadership Monument is located beside the Dothan Civic Center, at 126 N. Saint Andrews Street downtown. Its sleek black granite base features not only the names of the seven to be honored, but also leadership traits that these men shared. The seven stainless steel pylons that reach heavenward signify the heights to which leaders aspire and also denote that though they stretch upward, they are also grounded. The Dothan Leadership Monument recognizes past contributions to the City, but it is also positioned to serve as an inspiration to future leaders.
The monument was designed by local architect Andy Gosselin, and could not have been erected were it not for those who pushed to make the monument happen. Some of these participants include the Register, Woodham and Schmitz families who understood the need to honor the accomplishments of Dothan’s economic leaders. The names to be inscribed on the monument include Eustace E. Bishop, Sr., John A. Conti, Rufus A. Davis, Joseph L. Donofro, Andrew Paul Felts, Harry P. Hall, and James T. “Red” McGouirk.
The monument dedication will be held Thursday, June 18 at 10:00 in the morning. The public is encouraged to attend the brief ceremony paying tribute to these economic forefathers.
