Dothan Police Captain Passes Away This Morning

DOTHAN:   Retired Dothan Police Captain John Givens passsed away this morning after a lenghty battle with cancer. 

Captain Givens began with Dothan Police Department in the 1980's. He rose through the ranks of the department. During the John White Administration as Police Chief Captain Givens was deployed on active Military duty. He continued in the position of Captain for several years while on active duty.

During the time of military duty Captain Givens was diagnosed with cancer. He fought a long fight. Several years ago Captain Givens retired from the Dothan Police Department.

I had the pelasure of attending the Southwest Alabama Police Academy with Captain Givens. It was in the early 80's when the academy was at the old Troy State University campus which was in downtown Dothan in what is now the WTVY-TV building.

Captain Givens served the City of Dothan well during his tenure with the department. He always treated the persons he dealt with in a fair and professional manner.
