DOTHAN: Dothan Police Chief Greg Benton has administered the punishment for the Internal Affairs Investigation against Dothan Police Cpl. Raemonica Carney.
Chief Benton has issued a "major offense", which are offenses that are extremely serious in nature but not so serious that a discharge is required upon committing the first such offense". According to the Dothan Employee handbook, "the first major offense committed shall result in a final warning and one one to twenty day suspension without pay".
Chief Benton has suspended Cpl. Carney for 10 days.
The major offense comes as a result of posting by Cpl. Carney in reference to the former Police Officer in California that went on a crime spree and killing spree. The former officer in California was upset over actions taken by h is department against him.
Cpl. Carney has filed an objection to the punishment handed to her and appealed Chief Benton’s decision to the Dothan Personnel Board. The complaint of Cpl. Carney will ultimately end up before the Dothan Personnel Board. Until the decision and appeal process of Cpl. Carney, the discipline of Chief Benton is on hold.
There are other pending complaints from within the Dothan Police Department. A number of officers, double digit in number, have filed internal complaints against Cpl. Carney for the social media posts on her FACEBOOK.
