DOTHAN - HOUSTON COUNTY: A interesting night.
With the shooting on Eugene Street and the stand off on Meadlane, the departments handled it well.
The on shift patrol commander was Lt.. Rachael David. The suspect, somewhere between the ages of 13 and 15, ran into ( UNCONFIRMED ) someone else home where four children were.
Dothan Police and Houston County Sheriff Department surrounded the area and perimeter. Contact was made with the suspect. Dothan Police lost communications a couple of times but were able to talk the suspect into walking out the front door and all ended peacefully.
The call was handled with calmness and precision. It was handled with accurate information from the Dothan Police 911 Center relayed to officers, who arrived rapidly and developed intelligence information.
But responding from home on Sunday evening, both Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish and Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza. Both agencies and commanders have a great working relationship. Both left at once when they learned a juvenile suspect with four children in the house.
Both Parrish and Valenza have been in Dothan and Houston County for more than 30 years. Both have grown up in the departments, they know the capabilities and resources of the departments, how to interact and what resources to pull from where if needed.
THANK YOU to Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz and the members of the Dothan Commission in making a selection for Dothan Police Chief that was local. The actions of the department, the calm management of the scene, is a result of leadership grown locally.
The prior commissions really screwed up Dothan Police Department a number of years ago when they went outside of Dothan for a Chief. And HATS OFF to Mayor Schmitz and the Commission in demanding local.
THANK YOU to the local Republican Party and voters in the selection of Donald Valenza as Houston County Sheriff. He brings more than 30 years experience and again brings some of the same strengths into the Sheriff Department.
THANK YOU to both Chief Parrish and Sheriff Valenza for your leadership and dedication.
