The City of Dothan recently submitted an application to the Alabama Historical Commission for nomination of the Dothan Dixie Standpipe’s designation to the National Register of Historical Places.

On September 29th, 2016, the State of Alabama National Register Review Board met in Montgomery to review nominations from across the State.

The Alabama Board overwhelmingly approved the Standpipe’s nomination. The State’s approval quantifies that eligibility and adequacy requirements have been met. The State will now forward the Dixie Standpipe nomination to the US National Park Service for final review.

The Alabama Board was especially complimentary of the research and narrative developed for the nomination. The City of Dothan was commended for the revelation of newly discovered historical facts forming a legacy of people and natural resources (water) which impacted Dothan’s early success: a success that continues to the present.

Alabama Historical Commission Executive Director Lisa Jones communicated her appreciation for the Standpipe application and the continued efforts of the City of Dothan in preservation and restoration of Dothan’s cultural assets.

The Standpipe’s Nomination will now go to the Keeper of the National Registry in Washington DC for review. If awarded, an announcement of approval will be granted by The Director of the National Park Service at some future date.

Located at the intersection of Saint Andrews Street and Powell Street in Downtown Dothan, the 119 year old Dothan Dixie Standpipe is the oldest continuously operating water tower in the State of Alabama. The Standpipe sits atop a 625 foot deep artesian well which began supplying fresh water to the city of Dothan on April 5th, 1897. At 100 feet tall and 16 feet in diameter, the Standpipe has served as a historical and cultural landmark for generations of Dothan residents.
