An Escambia grand jury’s decision Monday to indict sheriff’s candidate John Powell on a misdemeanor election charge was the culmination of a campaign rife with bad blood, public vitriol and accusation.
Even by the standards of Escambia County sheriff’s elections, the race has been nasty.
“This has been one for the record books,” Powell said. “There has been some unusual activity in this campaign.”
With less than two weeks to go until the Aug. 14 primary, Powell, 48, has to pick up the pieces of his campaign to unseat Sheriff David Morgan, a well-financed incumbent. It’s hard to know how the criminal charge will impact the campaign, but Powell plans on pressing forward regardless.
