Evaluation shows Tim Wilder was truthful at hearing

11/24/14 6:20 PM

A physiological stress evaluation performed on the voices of terminated Dothan school superintendent Tim Wilder and his accuser was recently performed.

It was conducted by a former federal agent who has experience with PSE’s that are sometimes used by law enforcement and others including large corporations. He agreed to analyze the testimony of Wilder and Torrie Ethridge on the condition he not be identified because of his current position.

Wilder was fired amid allegations of sexual harassment toward Ethridge who, at the time, was an employee in the school system’s central office. She has since resigned.

The results show that Wilder was being truthful in his testimony before the school board November 14 while Ethridge’s analysis was inconclusive. Wilder was terminated at the conclusion of the hearing. He is considering court action.

“What this device does is it looks at the timber of the voice and asks the person as you would with a polygraph questions they would answer truthfully and the questions that are questionable,” said veteran police officer Dr. Jim Smith. “The questionable answers are looked at by the computer and there is a comparison between that and the accurate ones.”

Smith is the author of several books including “Crises Management for Law Enforcement,” and “Homeland Security and Medical Response.” He is currently the Troy University Dothan chief of police. He did not conduct the analysis.

While law officers, both at the state and local level, use the PSE Smith said studies show that the it is unreliable. “Based the National Institute for Justice that basically does the standards for this type of device they say it’s not accurate and say flipping a coin is more accurate.”

The evaluation of Wilder and Ethridge’s included changing the speed of their voices and other analysis. The former agent who conducted the tests says they were performed under less than ideal circumstances but doesn’t rule out the findings are accurate.
