MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama Department of Education has released a list of the state's failing schools as defined by the controversial Alabama Accountability Act of 2015.

There are a total of 76 schools on the list, up from 66 a year ago. Each of these schools is in the lowest six percent of schools. Students at schools on this list are allowed to transfer to non-failing public or private schools with their families being eligible for a tax credit to help pay for tuition.

The release of Alabama's failing schools list was met with mixed reaction depending on the school system.

Bigger school systems saw the list as a sign of progress and work to be done while others, like Elmore County, saw it as a job well done.

"It is really good news," said Andre Harrison, Superintendent of Elmore County School. "It just shows the work of our teachers and our administrators in the schools, the support of our parents and community, how we're working so hard on our students from an academic standpoint."

The number of schools on the list isn't the only thing that has changed since last year. An amendment passed last spring changed the way the list is compiled. Instead of using three out of the last six years' worth of data, the failing schools used last year's ACT Aspire test scores which measure reading and math. The test is given in grades 3 through 8 and then again in 10th.

Selma's Superintendent, just ten months into the job, is hoping changes she's already made will pay off next year.
