The Downtown Group (DTG), a medium to focus on commerce, culture and community in Dothan downtown, is proud to host October’s Foster Fest this Friday, October 17 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m.  Perfect fall weather is forecast for Friday – however, even more is in store for this final event of the 2014 season.

In addition to the two live music stages that flank both ends of North and South Foster Streets, the Wiregrass Museum of Art (WMA) has collaborated with Foster Fest to showcase fine art in a very public setting.  WMA brings Atlanta-based artist, Alex Brewer, also known as HENSE, and his large-scale abstract exhibition Interior Exterior to downtown Dothan.

“We developed Foster Fest to showcase Dothan’s downtown community, culture, creativity and camaraderie,” noted Jill Williams, Executive Director of The Downtown Group.  “Classic cars, local arts and crafts, and live music have always been the core of the event and we want to add more elements as the events grow.  WMA is featuring internationally renowned art displayed in a very public setting for the community to enjoy, not just when they visit the WMA gallery, but everyday - where they live, work and play.  We are excited to be able to help kick off their Interior Exterior exhibit through this collaboration with Foster Fest.”

As an abstract public artist, HENSE feels that art doesn't necessarily have to convey meaning but to encourage the eye to wonder what the meaning is behind the art. This exploration of imagination begins in the Blumberg Gallery of WMA and moves onto the streets of South Oates and North Foster in Downtown Dothan.  HENSE says this is the first opportunity that he has had to work in a unique site-specific public space combining a collage of wood and paint on a large scale. The international artist has been exhibited in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Washington D.C. and Lima Peru.  Interior Exterior will be open October 16 - December 27.

Foster Fest attendees can join in on the fun and show off their artistic flair by participating in a WMA-hosted public art project inspired by the HENSE mural in Porter Park during the event.

October’s live music features Jessica Morris on the North Stage.  Originally from Detroit, Jessica’s soulful and large voice is inspired by her hometown and religious roots.  The South stage stars Dothan’s own Modern Frontiers.

Foster Fest events feature classic cars, live music, local arts and craft and food vendors.  Every Foster Fest is free, pet and family-friendly and take place on the third Fridays of May through October from 6:00 – 10:00pm.  The event footprint includes the 100 and 200 blocks of North Foster Street and the 100 block of South Foster.

The DTG, located in Dothan, AL, is the marketing arm for Dothan downtown, focusing on building community awareness and participation downtown.
