Family Who Their Infant Son Died - How They Were Abused

HOUSTON COUNTY:    A text from a family who infant son died.

“ We wanted to thank you for doing the stories on the autopsies. You know the craziness we went through with our son’s death. He died on a Saturday and it was Thursday before we could have his funeral. But the hardest part was having to wait 8 months before getting any results back. The way the whole system is set up is not right.”

The parents were told “we could have paid a fee to get the results back sooner”.

This family had their first child. On a Saturday the child was unresponsive. He was rushed to Flowers Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

For over 8  months these parents sought answers from the Houston County Coroner and Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. They were told by the “state funded and court cost funded”, had you paid a fee you would have gotten the results back.

The parents are hard working, good and honest people. Their child, their infant child, died. And they sought answers.

The role of the Coroner is to determine the CAUSE and MANNER of death. Answers to bereaved families is the job. People seek the job, ask you to vote for them or apply with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Now do your job.

When I started these articles and the one I wrote yesterday detailing issues, I asked a friend of mine was I to harsh. His response was, see what kind of hate mail you get.

The mother, a school teacher I might add, sent me a text which is in this article thanking me for my article. The thanks were because they have walked the anguish walk over seeking answers to their child’s death.

That answered my question.

Officials like Mark Culver and Melinda McClendon think I am just a dumb a—bondsman. But at age 23, in the early 1980’s, I recognized there was a problem with the management of the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. I tried to do something about it.

As Coroner, I did get a Forensic Lab in Dothan. But people like Culver allowed us to lose the Forensic Lab and bereaved families get abused.

And politicians who have made a career out of being elected, such as Culver, are allowing some innocent people to sit in the county jails because of Forensic Sciences. And they are not doing anything about it.

I might be hated. Culver and folks like McClendon can say whatever they want about me. But the text from these parents saying “We wanted to thank you for doing the stories on the autopsies”, enough said.

Culver and McClendon always want to be critical of the messenger, Rickey Stokes. They know the message is true. So if they can discredit the messenger it might cause the people not to pay attention to the message.

To the affected families being abused, I am sorry!
