United Way Worldwide has declared February 11th as National 2-1-1 Day by recognizing the powerful resource that local 2-1-1 call centers are to connecting residents to crucial health and social services throughout the year. Every hour of every day, hundreds of people need essential human services - they are seeking help with basic needs, child care, healthcare, finding volunteer opportunities, crisis support, counseling, donations, information on government services and more. 2-1-1, www.211us.org, was first launched by United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta in 1997 and is spearheaded by United Ways and information & referral agencies in states and local communities. United Ways have a long-standing tradition of commitment to funding information and referral (I&R) services in their respective communities.

As of February 2015, 2-1-1 serves over 291 million Americans (93% of the entire population) covering all 50 states plus Washington DC and Puerto Rico (39 states plus DC and PR enjoy 100% coverage). Alabama is one of those 39 states with 100% coverage. In 2014, 2-1-1 Call Centers across the nation answered just under 16,000,000 calls.

Since opening the Dothan Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 Call Center in July of 2008 through December 2015, residents from the Wiregrass have made over 103,000 calls to 2-1-1. Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 (WUW 2-1-1) works with over 900 agencies to help meet the needs and improve the quality of life for so many people within our communities. WUW 2-1-1 maintains a database of health and human services throughout 7 counties in southeast Alabama to include: Barbour, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Geneva, Henry, & Houston counties.

2-1-1 is a simple way to connect people here in the Wiregrass with non-profit, social service, faith-based and government agencies when they need help, or when they want to help. The number operates 24-hours a day, seven days a week, and is a free service. If dialing 2-1-1 doesn’t work from your phone, dial 1-888-421-1266.

On Thursday February 11th, the Wiregrass Marine Corps League Detachment 752, will present a check to Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 at 1:30 p.m. in honor of National 2-1-1 Day. The Marine Corps League has supported Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 since its inception. The check presentation will take place at the 2-1-1 office located at 545 West Main St., Suite 313 in Dothan.

Thank you Wiregrass for your continued commitment and financial support of the Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 program. For additional information, visit www.Wiregrass211.com or contact David Duke at 334-836-1963.
