On Friday, February 14, 2014, at 1:41 am, Holmes County Communications Center received a 911 call from the Economy Lodge, 114 US Highway 90, room 342 stating their room was on fire. Bonifay Fire-Rescue was dispatched immediately and Engine 1 and Tanker 1 responded at 1:46 am and arrived on scene one minute later. Incident Command was established by Deputy Chief L. Cook and Bonifay Fire-Rescue began an aggressive interior attack on the fire beginning with room 342. Bonifay Police evacuated the rooms prior to Fire-Rescue arrival. The fire began in room 342 and quickly breached the attic space and spread through the attic above eight rooms to the north of the origin. At 2:20 am, Incident Command requested mutual aid from Chipley Fire Department and Gritney Fire Department. Both departments responded and assisted Bonifay Fire-Rescue in containing the fire. The fire was 90% contained at 3:03 am and all fire units cleared the scene at 7:15 am. The motel patrons were not injured however a Bonifay Fire-Rescue Firefighter/EMT suffered a leg injury on the roof during fire suppression and was taken to a local hospital by Holmes County EMS and later released. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Chief Shay McCormick wants to thank Chipley Fire Department and Gritney Fire Department for their response and hard work in assisting Bonifay Fire-Rescue in extinguishing this fire, as well as Bonifay Police Department, Holmes County Sheriff’s Office and Holmes County EMS for their response and assistance.
