MONTGOMERY CO., AL (WSFA) -While Hurricane Mathew won't affect central Alabama, forestry officials and firefighters admit that we could use some of the storm's side effects when considering fire danger in the state.
Multiple counties in our viewing area were put under a warning status by the Alabama Forestry Commission on Wednesday.
As of Wednesday, it hasn’t rained in Montgomery in 17 days. Because of current drought conditions, continued lack of precipitation, high probability of fuel ignition, and shortage of available manpower and resources, the Alabama Forestry Commission wants 46 Alabama counties, including seven in the River Region, to be on high alert.
According to the WSFA First Alert Weather Team, our yearly rainfall deficit in Montgomery is approaching six inches and firefighters in the area see firsthand what this all means.
“Fires seem to be bigger and hotter and faster this year and I think that can definitely be linked back to what the weather has been, such dry conditions,” said Matt Missildine, Pike Road Volunteer Fire Chief.
Bottom line, we need rain.
Because conditions are prime for wildfires to ignite, the Alabama Forestry Commission issued a Fire Danger Warning for 46 Alabama counties.
