HOUSTON COUNTY: This morning Houston County District Court Judge Benjamin Lewis held initial appearance which is also called first appearance.
Within 72 hours of arrest if a person has not made bond they are required to appear before the Judge. In this hearing the Judge informs the defendant of their rights. If the person can not afford an attorney the Judge appoints a lawyer to represent them.
ROBERT PARKS
Arrested for Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance. Parks has a $ 2500 bond. Allegations is synthetic which is a class C felony. This carries a penalty of a minimum of one year and one day to ten years in the Alabama Penitentiary. Parks is assigned to Circuit Judge Larry Anderson. He asked Judget Lewis could he get another Judge. Well, unless Judge Anderson has a legal conflict, he is stuck with Judge Anderson. Attorney Eric Davis is appointed to represent Parks in this case.
HAROLD LANCE SMITH
Arrested for a 2014 Fishing Without A License. Apparently Smith still owed the court $ 64.50 and he was arrested and placed in jail for probation revocation because he had not paid the court his money.
Smith was in court yesterday as a witness and they found this outstanding warrant and he was arrested. Smith had paid some money and got some credit for being in jail on the fishing without a license case. But the amount he owed the court increased by 30% when he did not pay because the District Attorney filed a show cause. A show cause adds 30% to what the person owes when they do not pay.
Smith also has a Criminal Mischief offense which he has a $ 300 bond.
QUANTEZ EDWARD WILLIAMS
Arrested for Failure To Appear for Show Cause Hearing and has a $ 500 cash only bond. The defendant t had failed to make their payments to the court in a 2009 case. When he failed to appear Judge Binford ordered an alias warrant of arrest and a $ 500 cash only bond.
From the first appearance Judge Lewis then went into traffic court.
