Five Ways Proposed Law would Radically Change Parole in Alabama

A major overhaul of the criminal justice system making its way through the Legislature, dubbed the Justice Reinvestment Act, would make sweeping change to the way Alabama releases and monitors criminals.


The bill, sponsored by Alabaster Republican Sen. Cam Ward, aims to save $407 million over the next six years, while reducing the prison population by more than 4,500.


The plan would radically change the way the parole board decides whom to release and how parolees are supervised.


Andy Barbee, research manager of the Council of State Governments Justice Center, said changes envisioned under the bill would place Alabama in line with the current national trend. He said not all states have parole.
