(DOTHAN, AL, January 16, 2014) – Flowers Hospital has reached a milestone event by being designated as an American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery Gynecological Surgery Center of Excellence. Flowers Hospital received the designation in December 2013. This accomplishment was achieved after passing a series of rigorous criteria established by the accrediting body AIMIS.
The Gynecological Center of Excellence designation is important to the Wiregreass Area because it gives patients added assurance that Flowers Hospital has not only passed and exceeded existing norms for minimally invasive surgery quality and delivery, but also has physicians on staff who meet the AIMIS standards.
Approximately 600,000 hysterectomies are performed each year in the United States, making it the second most common procedure performed on women in the U.S. And yet, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, an estimated two-thirds of these operations entail open surgeries rather than minimally invasive laparoscopic methods. The designation from AIMIS is focused on advancing solutions to facilitate the conversion of a greater percentage of procedures from more-traumatic open surgeries to laparoscopic approaches that offer patients shorter hospitalizations and faster returns to normal activities.
According to Steven McCarus, MD Chief Executive Officer of AIMIS, “We continue to assess and institute the use of latest technology, and teaching methods that advance continued use and implementation of minimally invasive surgery. Flowers Hospital has now joined only a handful of leading hospitals around the nation and the only one in Dothan to enjoy the AIMIS accreditation.”
Suzanne Woods, CEO of Flowers Hospital states, “This designation sets Flowers Hospital apart from other hospitals and joins some of the nation’s best hospitals for improving women’s health. This helps to contribute to the role and responsibility we have in the community to provide excellent surgical care for our patients we are privileged to serve.”
