(Dothan--) Landmark Park is excited to announce the Folk and Outdoor Workshop Weekend. Visitors will be introduced to a variety of folk crafts and skills. Participants can choose a different topic of interest for each three-hour session. Session topics vary and are listed below. Registration is required and can be made by calling the park at 334-794-3452. Prices depend on supplies needed and range from $10-$20.

February 21-22, 2015
Saturday Morning Session: 8:30-11:30
Choose from one of the following programs.
1.) Chair Bottoms and Caning Basics
Teacher: Roy Cooley and Billy Lawson
Location: Classroom 1
Limit: 12
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
Bring your own stools or small chairs to this step by step course for beginning chair caners. Your instructors will give a brief introduction on replacing chair bottoms using caning materials or binder twine and then be on hand to offer tips on technique during the hands-on portion. We will have plenty of chairs on hand for those who don’t wish to bring their own. Chairs should be in good repair before you come and will have to be finished at home.
2.) Beginning Blacksmithing
Teacher: Steve Lowery
Location: Blacksmith Shop
Limit: 3-4
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
Beginners will be introduced to the coal forge as well as the basics of working with steel using the anvil. Participants will learn basic forging techniques and tools, as well as fire management and will have plenty of time to test the skills they have learned with hands-on practice time with the forge. Participants will make an item using the basic forging techniques.
3.) Bird Watching Basics
Teacher: Rick Ingram and Sheri Devouassoux
Location: Auditorium
Limit: 30
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
Bird watching is a hugely popular hobby that can be done at exciting locations or in your own backyard. Join Rick Ingram and Sheri Devouassoux as they explain the basics of bird watching and give park visitors some helpful tips to make any bird watching adventure successful. They have been birding for about 20 years and are active members of the Alabama Ornithological Society. Don’t forget your binoculars.

1.) Beginning Blacksmithing

Join the Wiregrass Beekeepers Association for an introductory workshop for persons wishing to learn to make soap and bath and body products with beeswax. The class will cover introductory melt and pour soap making, lip balms and lotion bars. Class participants will enjoy interactive hands on instruction and will take their own handmade products home with them. Instructor Roslyn Horton is currently en route to becoming a Master Beekeeper and has been making all natural bath and body products for five years from her chemical free beehives in Dale County.
3.) Canning 101
Teacher: Bridgette Brannon
Location: Activity Barn
Limit: 10
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
Join the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service and discover how to extend the life of your garden vegetables with canning. Bridgette Brannon will be on hand to teach participants how to can vegetables. The class will participate in canning Bread and Butter Squash Pickles, as well as learning some tips and techniques to take home and use in your own kitchen.

1.) Cooking on the Hearth
Teacher: Liz Olliff
Location: Watson Cabin
Limit: 6
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
Cooking on the Hearth will introduce participants to making your own mouth-watering foods without the use of electricity. This session will give participants the chance to cook a variety of foods including, meats, stews and breads on the hearth with fire and a dutch oven. This session is ideal for campers in search of new meal time techniques or anyone interested in learning about how our ancestors kept their families fed.
2.) Nature Painting
Teacher: Jeanie Bozeman
Location: Classroom
Limit: 10
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
Spend the afternoon letting your creative side shine with a nature painting inspired by photographs taken at Landmark Park. Jeanie Bozeman will be here to instruct participants in the art of creating with canvas and acrylic paint. Jeanie is a park member and self taught painter and currently teaches art classes at the Tipsey Easel.
3.) Quilting Basics
Teacher: Sherry Burkhalter
Location: Classroom
Limit: 10
Price: $15 for members / $20 for non members
You will be surprised how fun, easy and practical it is to learn quilting basics as Sherry Burkhalter teaches participants about needles and thread, basic stitches and techniques on piecing together blocks. Sherry will have samples of finished quilts on hand to motivate and inspire.
