Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan is asserting that he had the legal right to suspend and reassign a deputy who undertook campaign activities for the sheriff’s political opponent.
In a motion to dismiss a federal lawsuit filed against him by Deputy Jeff Van Camp, Morgan says court rulings have concluded that “personal loyalty” to a sheriff “remains an appropriate and lawful requirement for the effective performance of the duties of deputy sheriff.”
The dispute arises out of the role that John Powell, who is Morgan’s opponent in the Aug. 14 Republican primary, played in a golf tournament that Gulf Coast Crime Stoppers sponsored at Scenic Hills Country Club last August.
