ESCAMBIA COUNTY FL:   Most Dothan - Houston County people could care less about the Escambia County ( Pensacola ) Florida Sheriff's race. Except for the fact that former Dothan Police Chief John Powell is a candidate for Sheriff.

Former Chief Powell ran against the former Escambia County Sheriff Ron McNesby. Powell lost. While Powell was Police Chief of Dothan he filed a lawsuit against McNesby.

Four years later in the next Escambia County Sheriff election, as Dothan's Police Chief, John Powell publically endorsed David Morgan for Sheriff against the incumbent Sheriff Ron McNesby. When Powell was Dothan's Police Chief he filed a civil lawsuit against McNesby. In the election Morgan defeated McNesby to become Escambia County Sheriff.

Now four years later John Powell is working to defeat Morgan for Sheriff. From reading reports from Escambia County the race is down and dirty.

You know, I kinda miss Ol'John as Police Chief in Dothan. He was great for news ratings. Drama and screw ups were easy things to find. I ran when game wardens were near because I always felt like I was huntin on a baited field.

A grand jury will meet Monday to decide whether criminal charges are warranted against Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan and his political foe John Powell in regards to their campaign finance reports.

Under Florida law, candidates can’t receive more than $50 in cash per donor per election cycle. Each candidate has accused the other of violating the law.
