Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward Retirement Celebration TONIGHT

GENEVA COUNTY:  Tonight from 6 PM to 8 PM there will be a retirement celebration for Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward. The celebration will be held in Geneva at Maple Avenue Baptist Church, 1009 West Maple Avenue.

Sheriff Ward will leave office at 12 midnight Monday night at which time Chief Deputy Tony Helms will take over as Sheriff.

Sheriff Ward has served 5 consecutive terms as Geneva County Sheriff. Prior to his being elected Ward was Police Chief in Hartford. Prior to the tenure as Chief of Police Ward was a Deputy with Geneva County. I think Ward even served a stint with Montgomery Police before returning to Geneva ( I think on Montgomery so do not hold me to that!).

Ward also served as President of the Alabama Sheriff Association which represents all Sheriff's in Alabama.

Something you might not know... When Sheriff Ward decided not to seek re-election he became what is referred to as a "lame duck". Meaning some tried Sheriff Ward in that, you are not running again so we can coast and not really work. To the folks of Geneva County, Sheriff Ward had a reality meeting with his staff.

In the reality meeting, Sheriff Ward made it clear until 12 midnight on January 19, I am the Geneva County Sheriff. As Sheriff, I have a duty and obligation to serve the people as their Chief Law Enforcement Officer of Geneva County. Which means, until the stroke of midnight, as Sheriff, WE, the Geneva County Sheriff Department will give more than 100% and serve the citizens.

Ward made it clear, I think even terminated one or more, when they did not take him to heart that he was not a lame duck Sheriff. That he had a job to do and they would serve the people through the last minutes of his tenure as Sheriff.

So even though Greg Ward did not seek reelection, Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward continued to serve and protect and manage the Geneva County Sheriff Department. And he will do so until the stroke of midnight on the last night.

TO GREG:

Thanks for your service. You have served with honor and  integrity. Be prepared for anxiety over the fact the past 5 terms you have been in the know, you have been involved and you have been called on. You will be entering a time that people will not be calling you as they have in the past. A time where you will not know all that is going on in Geneva County.

But the time you have served has been good for Geneva County and the State of Alabama. Thanks and good luck in your retirement.

Hope to see you in another elected office in the future. Heck, you would even make a good County Commission Chairman/Probate Judge for Geneva County!
