Governor Bentley to Corps: Keep the locks open

Gov. Robert Bentley (R-Alabama) is asking the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to reconsider its decision to close locks along the Chattahoochee and Alabama rivers to recreational watercraft.


Corps officials recently announced they would close the Walter F. George lock on the Chattahoochee and other locks to recreational traffic. They stated the closures are needed to save money.


A counter-plan has been submitted which, if approved, could allow some use of the locks by recreational watercraft. A decision on that plan could be announced by early next week.


Sen. Jeff Sessions, Rep. Martha Roby and other lawmakers from the state of Alabama have lobbied the Corps to reconsider its decision. Bentley did the same thing in his letter to Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works.
