This morning in reading the on line Atlanta Journal, I ran across a interesting article.

While it is about a private company, it rang truth in a statement I urge you to remember…

I urge you to remember this statement. Dothan is currently in search for a new Police Chief. We have two inside candidates. Both qualified, ready, able and willing to step into the Chief seat and guide the Dothan Police Department into the future.

Police Captain Benton and Parrish, have the experience and talents to lead the department. We urge in the strictest sense one of these gentleman be given the opportunity to become Dothan’s newest Police Chief.

While Interim Police Chief Larry Draughon is doing a good job. Each day you let waste without the Chief position being filled is not a good day. The department needs to continuity and that position needs to be filled. The Dothan Personnel Board did not waste time and did not do a dog and pony show for the Personnel Director position.

The filling of the  Chief position should be complete before deciding on the new contract for the City Manager.

With that said again, Dothan needs to look to the future. It is the responsibility of the Mayor and Commission to look to the future and make sure a successor to City Manager Mike West is from within. Whether that successor is in 2010 or later, a pattern of succession needs to be in place.
