Today I want to wish a very special HAPPY BIRTHDAY to a young man who,is a friend of mine.


Today is the 24th birthday of Cole Battles.


Cole, happy birthday. Thank you for being my friend.



A lot of negative has been published and said about Cole and about Judson. They are both special young men of which I have had the pleasure of knowing for years. 


While an unfortunate few minutes has negatively impacted several lives, that few minutes is not to define either of these two young men.


Since today is Cole's birthday I am going to focus on Cole.


He is a kind, well mannered young man. He is polite, willing to help, and someone you would be honored to be around, have in your home and to be a part of your family.


He graduated from Rehobeth High School. He attends Memphis Baptist Church. At the time of the life changing few minutes, Cole was on a journey to be a nurse. And that few minutes has altered his course in life to go into nursing.


Cole very much regrets the very short few minutes. He was told by the court and lawyers he could have no contact with the victim. It was not until court last week that he could ever apologize for what had taken place. The court, the lawyers, the system prevents an acceptance of responsibility and contact with victims. The system is designed to make victims mad because of the steps in the process.


But many times Cole wanted to reach out to the victim. But the system would not allow. 


While the victim's anger is understandable, some in the community has had harsh words towards both young men. i want to tell you, do not let what happen, do not let the comments of others, define these two young men.


They are fine young men. That morning there was zero intent to assault or rob anyone. A chain of events that can only be wished to change but can not be changed.


And that chain of events altered the victim's life and altered these two young men's life.


Nothing said is meant to be critical of the victim or to minimize the situation.


But the moments of that June night, and what has been said, is not the definition of these two young men.


But a lesson to all, seconds, can alter or change lives forever.



I consider it a honor to call these two young men my friend.
