Havana Florida Man Charged with Burglary and Theft

On August 6th, 2015 at approximately 7:15am, officers with the Marianna Police Department responded to Hollis Body Shop in reference to the report of a burglary. Upon officer’s arrival, video surveillance footage was reviewed. A description of the suspect was obtained and an investigation into the burglary was conducted. Officers discovered that a black male entered the business. While inside the business, the subject ran sacked through drawers and various vehicles in the business. The suspect was observed moving one vehicle near the gate in an attempt to steal the vehicle. The suspect was never able to get the vehicle out of the business.
While officers were conducting this investigation, Marianna Police Department’s Communications received a call in reference to a vehicle theft at Service Auto Parts, located a short distance from Hollis Body Shop. Officers arrived on scene and made contact with individuals who had a black male, identified as Clarence Smith Jr., present with them. Witnesses advised Smith got into a company vehicle and drove to the other side of the fenced in parking area. Smith then exited the stolen vehicle and began to burglarize another vehicle.
While on scene, officers determined that Smith met the description of the subject on video surveillance from Hollis Body Shop. Officers were able to take Smith into custody without incident. Smith was transported to the Marianna Police Department for processing.
Just a short moment after taking Smith into custody, officers were made aware of a burglary which occurred at Discount Cars, where a window was found busted out. There weren’t any items that were stolen, although officers determined that Smith entered the business, looking for keys.
The Marianna Police Department was again contacted by employees at Holland Body Shop in reference to Gulf Medical Supplies, a neighboring business, which they suspect had also been broken into. It was found that Smith entered the building during the night hours in an attempt to located keys for a vehicle. There were no major items that were taken in any of these burglaries at any of these businesses.
During the investigation Smith was Mirandized and admitted to committing the burglaries at Hollis Body Shop, Discount Cars and Gulf Medical Equipment. Smith also admitted to stealing the vehicle and burglarizing the other two vehicles. Smith was charged with the above mentioned charges and transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance.
