HOUSTON COUNTY:     It is Saturday. And Houston County District Court Judge Benjamin Lewis is working.


Alabama law requires that a person arrested have an initial appearance within 72 hours of arrest.


A holiday weekend with Thanksgiving being on Thursday.


Today at 11 AM Judge Lewis was "inside" the Houston County Jail meeting with the inmates. There Judge Lewis advises each person of what the charges are, the penalty range, the bond amount, can they afford an attorney, if not he discusses if they qualify for a contract lawyer.


Each holiday you will find that Judge Lewis personally visits the jail to fulfill the requirements of Alabama Law.


During the weekly, normally every morning at 8:30 AM Judge Lewis holds the initial appearance via video from his assigned courtroom to the jail.
