A homicide investigation is underway after a man was found shot to death in Opelika this evening.

Opelika police and firefighters at 7:14 p.m. responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive man in the 1700 block of Hurst Street, said Lee County Coroner Bill Harris. When they arrived on the scene, they found an unresponsive male that appeared to have been shot. Harris pronounced the man dead on the scene.

Harris said that due to the circumstances and evidence at the scene, the case is being treated as a homicide, but he didn't elaborate. "We will not be releasing the name of the victim pending notification of family or any further details at this time to protect the integrity of this investigation,'' Harris said in a statement.
