I know that many of you are probably wondering what efforts came out of the meeting we held several months ago at Covenant United Methodist Church.  The issue of suicide is a serious health problem that causes immeasurable pain, suffering, and loss to individuals, families, and communities nationwide.  For every person who dies by suicide, more than 30 others attempt to take their lives.  Suicide prevention efforts must involve a wide range of partners and draw on a diverse set of resources and tools.  I have been researching , attending events in our community, and meeting with Rose Blakely Phillips of Wiregrass Suicide Prevention Services several times now to discuss this issue and gather information.  I have joined efforts with Rose and the Wiregrass Suicide Prevention Board in an effort to be effective and to utilize “what has already being done” to educate, inform, prevent suicide in the wiregrass.  I hope through a consolidated effort we can work together towards the goal of reducing the number of suicides and suicide attempts in the wiregrass.

The Wiregrass Suicide Prevention Services will host a candle light service in commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day, Thursday, September 10, at Poplar Head Park, located in front of the Civic Center, at 6:30 pm.   We will light a candle to remember those lost to suicide, to celebrate those who have survived attempts and to increase awareness of prevention.  We would like to invite each of you to join us to remember and celebrate loved ones.

Sunday, September 27th we will host an OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALK to raise money for critical research and prevention programs.  Please consider forming a team and joining us for the walk.  Please go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention afsp.org/walk to sign up your team or be a part of the walk.  The walk will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 at Westgate Park Walking Trail.  For more information email [email protected] or you may call me personally at 334 793-4440

We are also looking for sponsors for our t-shirts that we will sell to bring awareness and funds for this outreach.  Sponsorships are 250.00 and can be individuals or businesses.  Sponsorships are needed asap so that we can have the shirts printed in the next few days.  Contact me for more information or Wiregrass Prevention Services.

Thank you for caring so much about this issue.  I truly believe there are other options rather than suicide.  I want to a part of making this a reality.
