DOTHAN - HOUSTON COUNTY:  On February 10 the Advisory Committee of the Dothan - Houston County E 911 will conduct interviews of potential candidates for the 911 Coordinator.

There are 4 finalists for the position. Each will have a public interview and then the Advisory Board will make a recomendation to the 911 Board. The 911 Board consists of all Dothan Commissioners and two Houston County Commissioners.

The Advisory Board is just that, an Advisory Board. Their decisions are not binding and they have no authority to expend money. Only recomend.

The Dothan - Houston County E 911 brings in over 1 million dollars a year. The board is responsible for receiving, transmitting and dispatching emergency calls. This is done with 911 providing equipment and technology. The actual manpower to complete the task is done by Dothan Emergency dispatchers and Houston County Emergency dispatchers.

Dothan - Houston County 911 has launched a design phase and in the future a construction phase for a joint emergency operations center. All communications and Emergency Management will be housed in the single facility.

Currently Houston County Sheriff Department dispatches all emergency services in Houston County except Dothan Police, Dothan Fire and Alabama State Troopers. The combined center will not change that, just all operations will be in one center.

The one center should change into one command. But the testorone in the management of the centers will not yield to what is best for the people. They are afraid they will  loose control when the combined services will allow all to know what is going on.

ONe day egos will yield to what is best.
