The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating another scam in Jackson County. This particular scam is accomplished by a person who has established an Internet friendship with the intended victim. The victim is asked to assist in a financial transaction to help them get money directly or is sent to a third party. The scam artist sends a check to the victim who is asked to deposit the check and then send money by wire back to them or to a third party. If the victim completes the transaction they will learn the check they were given is fraudulent and then the funds will be taken from the victim’s account to cover the cost of the transaction. It is not uncommon for a check to be written for more than the amount the scammer is asking for so that it appears the victim is making some money for helping. The latest scam offenders are using checks that identify the company as Metropolitan Exposition Services, Inc. out of Moonachie, New Jersey. The checks appear to be copies of actual checks that were stolen from the company some time ago.
Sheriff Lou Roberts reminds everyone to be very cautious when dealing with people they know little or nothing about especially when those people want to be financially involved or are asking for your personal information. “Never give your personal information, bank or credit card information to anyone that solicits this from you.”
