The loss of a home to fire is devastating at any time, but especially when Christmas is approaching.

A scene such as this was averted recently by the Cottonwood Volunteer Fire Department.

Shortly after 10:00 AM on Saturday, a person reported the odor of smoke in his home. There was a problem earlier in the day with the heating unit and it had been cut off.

Nearby firefighters responded directly to the scene with an engine arriving shortly. There was light smoke in the area around the mobile home but no fire was visible. Using the thermal imaging camera, heat was found near the heating unit, but no indication of a working fire. While firefighters watched closely from inside and underneath the home, a fan was used to force the odor and any smoke from the residence. The draft caused flames to be exposed in the insulated space between the heating unit under the house and the floor. Access to the fire area was then forced and flames were quickly extinguished limiting damage to that immediate area only.

Although the total time on this scene was two hours, most of the time was spent investigating and locating the source. Once found, the fire was out and the scene secured within 20 minutes.

An alert homeowner's actions and the diligence of firefighters kept this family from a horrible holiday experience. A little inconvenience can be tolerated much easier than dealing with the loss of property.

Lovetown VFD and Cottonwood Rescue also assisted on this scene.

A TIP TO THE PUBLIC: Call 9-1-1 immediately when a fire is suspected. Volunteer firefighters are not sitting in the stations waiting for a call. We may be at home eating dinner with the family as you were doing. Don't panic and please get out of our way. If one fireman arrives on his personal vehicle don't yell at him to do something. He is updating information to dispatch to assure that the proper personnel and equipment are enroute. We are your neighbors - and we care!
