HOUSTON COUNTY: The second week of 2015 kicks off Houston County Jury trials in the House of Justice or as some refer to "JUST US"!
All Circuit Judges have dockets with several cases. Judge Conaway has civil cases and Judge Anderson has a mixture of criminal and civil cases. The other Circuit Judges, Binford, Moulton, and Mendheim all have criminal cases.
Judge Mendheim has two election ballot fraud cases scheduled on his docket. Judge Binford has a Capital Murder - Death Penalty case on his docket. It is the last case on the docket so not sure they will reach the case.
Houston County District Court Judge Benjamin Lewis will kick off with initial appearance. Judge Lewis holds initial appearances of persons who are in jail and not had a scheduled appearance before a Judge. Within 72 hours of arrest persons who have not made bond are to be carried before the Judge to understand what they are charged with, the bond amount, if they can not afford an attorney then one will be appointed for them.
Following the initial apperance hearings Judge Lewis moves to a court docket of Domestic Violence trials and NWNI trials.
A full day of court. The Circuit and District Court Clerks will be busy. Circuit Court Clerk Carla Woodall will be busy managing the jurors and dividing the panels between the 5 Circuit Judges to select potential jurors to hear cases.
