Just in time for Memorial Day weekend; Bridge replacement on Ross Clark Circle complete

DOTHAN, Ala.—The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has announced the completion of major construction activities, on the Beaver Creek Bridge at Ross Clark Circle between Bauman Drive and Fortner Street, which began on February 9, 2015.

Construction signs and reduced speed limit will continue to be in effect while a few beautification items remain.

This first of a kind project for Alabama allowed a total bridge replacement for this heavily travelled route to be completed with less than one full week of detour since construction began. Using the Accelerated Bridge Slide methodology ALDOT was able to focus on the needs of commuters and local businesses. While there were single lane closures and reduction in traffic over the construction period, a typical bridge replacement would have required a full road closure and detour for 10 to 14 months.

“We are very proud of this project,” said Sheri Ellis, Troy Area Operations Engineer. “We had no major safety issues and the least amount of traffic disruption of any bridge project I have ever been involved.”

While road expansion was necessary, ALDOT’s goal was to cause the least amount of traffic disruption as possible. ALDOT invested significant resources to reduce driver inconvenience and communicate with the community about their work.

“We feel very good regarding the level of communication established with the local community,” said Brantley Kirk, ALDOT spokesperson. “The use of social networks, broadcast and print media, email, phone and community outreach were implemented to keep the driving public up to date on the construction efforts and when to seek alternative routes.”

Kirk said the response from both social and news media was remarkable. “When we started this project, people were interested but not engaged. Once the bridges were in place, followers were active on Facebook to answer the questions posed by other residents.”

The new bridges were constructed to the side of the existing structures. Once completed, the old bridge was demolished, and the new one moved into its place over a single weekend for each.

“ALDOT is very grateful for the public’s attention and efforts,” said Ellis. “When we asked for the publics’ assistance, we got it.  Motorists cooperated by ignoring the distractions road construction can create and, in many cases, voluntarily used alternative routes to help reduce traffic flow. The drivers were overly cautious which helped us maintain a safe work environment during this innovative construction.”

Video cameras were placed along the roadway to monitor the work and share with local interested parties, as well as engineers and other professionals from around the country. “Since it was the first of its kind in the state, we have garnered a great amount of attention,” said Kirk. “There have already been some industry articles written and interest in project case studies. We are proud of our contractors and our entire ALDOT team for the job they did, and we are all glad this vital artery is open and fully operational for the start of summer.”
