Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox said that Jerry Lamar Lett, age 44, of Kinsey, Alabama was taken into custody Tuesday morning at approximately 1:00 a.m. and charged with Trafficking in Cocaine after being stopped for a traffic violation on U.S. Highway 431 near Abbeville.
Henry County Sergeant Jesse Ingram, who was on routine patrol, stopped a 2009 Blue Mazda, which was driven by Lett, southbound near County Road 42 and approached the vehicle. During the routine traffic stop, Sgt. Ingram noticed that Lett and a juvenile passenger appeared to be extremely nervous and both gave conflicting stories about where they were coming from.
Authorities also detected the odor of narcotics emanating from the vehicle interior which led to a probable cause search of Lett’s vehicle. Sgt. Ingram searched the vehicle and discovered approximately 10 ounces of cocaine concealed within the vehicle’s interior.
Lett, who has a history of drug violations, was then arrested and charged with one count of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance. The juvenile was turned over to an adult and the incident remains under investigation.
“This cocaine was headed to Kinsey and would have made back to our streets had Lett not been arrested. My Deputies and the Officers with Abbeville Police Department have made several big drug busts during the past few months and I want to commend them for their effort”, said Sheriff Maddox.
Sgt. Ingram was assisted by Officers with the Abbeville Police Department.
