KINSEY: The Town of Kinsey needs a Police Chief. But, to the people who are applying BEWARE before you apply.
Kinsey had Keith Whitehead as Chief of Police for the past 12 to 15 years. Serving along side Keith has been Quinton Vann. Vann has served with Kinsey for the past 8 years.
In small towns that is a long time.
Recently Whitehead left Kinsey. The council made Quinton Vann Acting Police Chief. The town advertised through placing a notice at the town hall, facebook and RSN. They received three applicants through closing time for applications.
One applicant was Quinton Vann. One was a officer with another department who was under investigation and has since been terminated from that department. One was from someone who wanted a part time job as a police officer.
Rather than doing the right thing and making Quinton Vann Chief of Police, the majority of the council has decided to start the process over. The have to spend $ 224.00 with The Dothan Eagle to advertise and are taking applications again.
Councilman Joe Watson made it clear the vote to start over was not unanimous and he did not support it along with other council members. Watson and some others wanted to promote Vann to the Chief of Police job. He has been on the job for 8 years and done a good job.
Tonight Mayor Jason Reneau, Councilman Joe Watson, Charles Douglas, Jason Cherry and Daniel Rich showed up for a work session concerning the Chief of Police position and a job description. Not bothering to show up was Councilman Belinda McClantoc, John Laseter and Anthony Thomas. NOTE: John Laseter has been in Birmingham with a child that is sick.
When pressed for why the council would not promote Quinton Vann, Councilman Jason Cherry said he wanted to interview more people . He was not happy they did not get anymore applicants. When asked If the council decided on a process, closed the dates, then was it not the proper thing to do to take the applicants, weed them out, and interview and select. The Mayor and Councilman Cherry said they did not receive applicants. But they did. They got three. One was out because he wanted a part time job, one was out because he was under criminal investigation, and then there was the man who had been there for 8 years and good enough to serve as acting Chief of Police.
But Councilman Jason Cherry wants to interview more people.
So, you can apply for Kinsey Police Chief. But BEWARE…if you have stayed at a small town for 8 years, which Quinton Vann has done, been quiet and done your job, which Quinton has done, and the opportunity to move up comes your way in the Town of Kinsey, do not think it will. Because Mayor Jason Reneau and Councilman Jason Cherry will put the screws to you.
NOTE: Quinton Vann has not talked to me or asked me to come to his defense or assistance. In fact, this article might hurt him.
I always brag on Mayor Jason Reneau when he responds to fires and I see him working.
But what I have seen tonight, Jason has made me very ashamed of his actions and those of the majority of the Council of Kinsey. They are mistreating a person that has been able to keep controversy down and remain in Kinsey for 8 years. And they are deliberately spitting in his face and treating him like a old stray dog. And I expected more from Jason Reneau.
He is a better man than his actions are showing in this matter. AS to jason Cherry, I do not know him. But the answers he gave tonight, I was not very impressed.
To Quinton Vann, sorry you are being treated like dirt from the Mayor and majority of the council.
