DOTHAN:  Landmark Park’s annual “Heritage Forums,” a series of guest speakers offering programs on state and local history, begins on Sunday, July 12 at 3 p.m. with “SEND THE ALABAMIANS: WWI FIGHTERS IN THE RAINBOW DIVISION,” presented by Rod Frazer. His father and uncle fought in the 167th (Alabama) Regiment, 42nd (“Rainbow”) Division, and American Expeditionary Force, in World War 1.

In trying to uncover his father’s past, he discovered the most recent full-length book on the 167th was published in 1919. Frazer penned a new biography of the regiment, focusing on its contribution to the war effort in the Battle of Croix Rouge Farm. He discusses the men’s training and valor at this important battle.

On July 19, Bill Ramsey will present: “FICTION AND REALITY: I’M FROM DOTHAN AND THE HISTORY OF THE HOUSTON HOTEL.” Bill Ramsey grew up in Dothan and has strong memories of the Houston Hotel, which his parents owned and operated from 1959 until mid-1972. Ramsey will discuss that history and his recently published novel.

Our final program will be on July 26: “BARTRAM IN ALABAMA-TRAVELS AND ROADSIDE MARKERS.” TR Henderson, board member of the Alabama Historical Association, will present a program on naturalist William Bartram. In the late 1700’s Bartram was an early explorer that had followed an Indian trading path that later became the state of Alabama. He published a book in 1791 titled Travels of William Bartram that included many new discoveries of plants and animals of the Southeast. You may have noticed roadside markers or nature trails that bear his name.

Programs take place each Sunday in July at 3 p.m. in the Interpretive Center Auditorium at Landmark Park. Refreshments will be provided. Programs are free with paid admission to the park ($4 for adults, $3 for children, free for members and children 2 and under).

Landmark Park, home of the Alabama Agricultural Museum, is a 135-acre historical and natural science park located on U.S. Highway 431 North in Dothan, Al. For more information contact the park at 334-794-3452 or landmarkparkdothan.com
