HOUSTON COUNTY: The salary of the Houston County Sheriff is around $ 78,000.00 per year. The last raise for the Sheriff was last increased as former Houston County Sheriff Lamar Glover was leaving office and Andy Hughes was beginning. Over 8 years ago.
At the time the salary of Sheriff was increased the salary was $ 65,000.00 per year and the Dothan Police Chief was $ 73,000.00. The position of Chief of Police increases with step increases as they serve.
Dothan Police Chief Greg Benton started as a salary of $ 73,000.00 per year when he was appointed. Today Dothan Police Chief makes around $ 93,000.00 per year. The salary is tied to position of Police Chief and Benton being a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
Dothan Fire Chief made $ 73,000.00 per year when appointed. Today Dothan Fire Chief Larry Williams makes a salary of $ 102,000.00 per year. The Fire Chief gets an additional 8% because he is also a paramedic. This same benefit is with members of Dothan Fire Department.
We lost Andy Hughes to the Alabama Department of Law Enforcement because of more money. We have Donald Valenza as Sheriff. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy as is Greg Benton.
The local legislartive delegation and Houston County Commission needs to introduce local legislation increasing the salary of the Houston County Sheriff to $ 95,000.00 per year. A increase of a Sheriff normally lasts for three terms.
The Sheriff is a working position. The Sheriff, along with deputies, place their lives on the line. The Sheriff serves as a guardian for those who can not take care of themselves. The Sheriff manages the department and a jail the size of a small city. The Sheriff manages the courthouse securiity and serves all process for the court.
In the term of Andy Hughes and Donald Valenza, we have a working Sheriff. A Sheriff that works and responds. When something of significance occurs, look around the Sheriff himself arrives. We have a Sheriff, when in a crisis, you want to see that black Tahoe arrive on the scene.
We need to KEEP A SHERIFF. And pay is a significant factor in keeping a professional Sheriff which is dedicated to the people.
We had that in Andy Hughes. We have that in Donald Valenza.
Houston County Commissioners - Curtis Harvey, Brandon Shoupe, Doug Singefield, Jackie Battles and Mark Culver, the Alabama Legislative Delegation, Senator Smith and Beasley, Representatives Lee, Clouse, Chesteen and Grimsley - please introduce legislation and get the salary of Sheriff comparable to Dothan Police Chief and Dothan Fire Chief.
