Leona Graham, MD to Head Expanded AltaCare Program

DOTHAN, Ala. - Southeast Alabama Medical Center (SAMC) is pleased to welcome Leona J. Graham, MD, as the medical director of the recently expanded AltaCare Outpatient Psychiatry and Counseling program.
Dr. Graham comes to SAMC from Kansas City, Kan., where she was employed as a psychiatrist at the Kansas City Veterans Administration Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Dr. Graham has vast clinical and direct patient care experience, having worked as both a nurse in Michigan and a chiropractor in California.
Dr. Graham is a native of New York City and obtained her medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine in Portsmouth, Dominica, West Indies, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She completed dual residencies in psychiatry and internal medicine at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City. Dr. Graham completed a Fellowship in addictions at Kansas University Medical Center.
Dr. Graham, who has extensive research in nicotine dependence, said the addiction fellowship came about because she has seen many people ostracized because of their addition problems.
"My broad-based experience has shown me every spectrum of human fragilities and weaknesses,” Dr. Graham said. “My education, training and experience lends to greater insight and understanding of the trials and tribulations that ordinary people face in their personal lives. I understand the psycho-social factors that cause people to become addicted. I have the talent and clinical expertise to help them overcome these pitfalls.”

Dr. Graham has served as a volunteer medical team member, providing earthquake relief in Mexico, and as part of a community clinic mission to Mexico. She also volunteered with the Special Olympics summer games. Spanish is her second language.
Dr. Graham’s husband, Daniel Webster Jr., is currently deputy district director, Kansas City District Office, U.S. Small Business Administration, Kansas City, Mo. He is a native of Montgomery and served seven years on Active Duty as a Field Grade Commissioned Offer in the U.S. Army during Operation(s) Enduring Freedom and Iraq Freedom.
