McClendon's Lies and Deceit

As this campaign draws closer to election day I felt we, as the voters, should know what the truth really is before heading to the polls on Tuesday. Between the commercials and the postcards I will be dedicating an article on as many of the items on it as possible to try and let people know the truth. 



Part #1


 


LIE: On Friday, Sept. 26th, a mailer started  arriving at the homes of voters in Houston, Dale and Geneva Counties falsely accusing Harri Anne of "sponsoring a new sales tax increase right here at home". In this attack ad, the mail piece states that Harri Anne “sponsored, and voted for, a sales tax increase right here in the district,” referencing HB 346 in 2014 – Sales Tax on Geneva County.



FACT: In accordance with Alabama’s constitution, individual counties are unable to raise taxes without first receiving approval from the state legislature. HB 346 was a House Bill introduced/sponsored by the current Republican Rep. Donnie Chesteen originating out of a unanimous resolution signed by the Republican Geneva County Commission. Due to the restrictions placed on the county commission by the state constitution, Geneva County Commissioners unanimously requested that Rep. Chesteen introduce the bill in Montgomery to allow the people of Geneva County to vote on a potential sales tax increase that would generate funds to build a new jail, and complete a number of much needed road and infrastructure repairs.


So, the original resolution requesting the right of the people in Geneva County to vote came from the unanimous consent of the Geneva County Commission and was sponsored by Rep. Donnie Chesteen, so Harri Anne voted with other members of the legislature (and the local delegation) to honor their request to allow the people in her district the right to vote on whether or not they were in favor of a one cent sales tax. Ultimately the people in Geneva County will vote on the sales tax next week when they go to the polls, but the important matter is that Harri Anne Smith honored the request of the Republican County Commissioners in Geneva County, and has always supported the people’s right to vote. It will be listed as a Special Sales Tax Election on the Geneva County ballot. 



Conclusion: Melinda McClendon said Harri Anne RAISED the taxes. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE. In truth, Harri Anne has taken NO position on the sales tax. She has actually urged people in Geneva County to get out and vote their opinions on this very important issue of imposing this tax on themselves or not.
