Dothan artist Ann Hart’s brother lost his battle with cancer in 2012. But his memory lives on through her recently donated artwork to the SAMC Foundation. Ann and her husband Bill, joined SAMC Foundation staff members to dedicate the piece to the Southeast Cancer Center. “Angels of Inspiration” is a mixed media assemblage that includes pastels, handmade paper and copper leaf. Ann says she began the piece years ago when she was teaching 7th grade art in a local school. She says she challenged her students to think outside the box in terms of their interpretation of angels.

“Life is full of chaos and this piece is a reflection of how we all have encouragers or angels all around,” said Ann. “The circle represents the struggle in life for some definition.”

The piece is located in a small seating area just outside the Southeast Cancer Center located inside Southeast Alabama Medical Center. “I’ve never heard so much conversation about something like this,” said Scott Griffin, Director of the Southeast Cancer Care Network. The SAMC Foundation has been the recipient of numerous works of art for use at both SAMC and the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine. It’s all part of the “Art of Healing” program based on the concept that art can bring joy to the lives of those who are struggling with health issues. “We are thrilled that Ann chose to donate this beautiful piece to our Foundation,” said Valerie Barnes, Executive Director of the SAMC Foundation. “Staff, patients and doctors are sharing many positive comments so it’s already having a positive impact.”

Ann says her brother, James Robert Dowling, was an architect and enjoyed creating things just like she does. “I’m honored to share this artwork and hope that it may help others on their journey.”
