Make-A-Wish Alabama is dedicated to fulfilling every child’s one true, heartfelt wish.
The substance of a wish varies greatly from one child to the next. It is not the specifics of a wish that matters – only that everything is within reach. The hope of endless possibilities empowers seriously ill children to think beyond any boundary. Such empowerment often changes their perception.
Make-A-Wish Alabama is determined to bring a wish to every eligible child.
In 2013, Make-A-Wish Alabama fulfilled 130 wishes. In 2014, Make-A-Wish Alabama is on course to fulfill more than 140 wishes; however, recent statistics show that more than 400 children in Alabama will be diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition this year alone, which means our job is never complete.
In April, Make-A-Wish® launched its annual “Wishes in Flight” campaign that is geared at educating the general public about Make-A-Wish and how people can donate their unused air miles with Delta, US Air and United airlines.
It’s a way to make a direct impact on a child’s wish without ever having to write a check. Every mile raised is only used on travel wishes!
Annually, Make-A-Wish would need more than 2.5 billion miles, or 50,000 round-trip tickets to cover every travel wish that is granted in the United States. Here in Alabama, more than 80 percent of wishes involve travel, which is higher than the national average of 70 percent. 26.5 million miles are needed every year to make all travel wishes come true in Alabama.
Since the start of the campaign, Make-A-Wish Alabama has received almost 500,000 miles!
From now until August 31, the state of Alabama has an incredible opportunity.
For every mile donated the national Make-A-Wish office will match, mile-for-mile, up to one million miles!
Donating miles is quick and easy! Log on to Alabama.wish.org/wishesinflight or call 205-254-WISH (9474) to learn how you can get “on-board” and put a smile on a child’s face!
Because Make-A-Wish Alabama started as its own independent chapter in September of 2012, this is the first “Wishes in Flight” campaign for the Alabama chapter.
