Make-A-Wish® Alabama kicks off Inaugural Wishes in Flight Campaign

Make-A-Wish Alabama is dedicated to fulfilling every child’s one true, heartfelt wish.

The substance of a wish varies greatly from one child to the next. It is not the specifics of a wish that matters – only that everything is within reach. The hope of endless possibilities empowers seriously ill children to think beyond any boundary. Such empowerment changes their perception.

Make-A-Wish Alabama is determined to bring a wish to every eligible child.

During FY2013, Make-A-Wish Alabama fulfilled 130 wishes. In FY2014, Make-A-Wish Alabama is on course to fulfill more than 140 wishes; however, recent statistics show that more than 400 children in Alabama will be diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition, which means our job is always far from complete.

In April, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® will launch its annual “Wishes in Flight” campaign that is geared at educating the general public about Make-A-Wish and how people can donate unused air miles.

Annually, Make-A-Wish® would need more than 2.5 billion miles, or 50,000 round-trip tickets to cover every travel wish that is granted in the United States. Here in Alabama, more than 80 percent of wishes involve travel, which is higher than the national average of around 70 percent. 26.5 million miles are needed every year to make all travel wishes come true in Alabama.

Make-A-Wish Alabama is asking state-wide newspapers to promote “Wishes in Flight” throughout the month of April and on World Wish Day, Tuesday, April 29. If a media outlet would like an interview, Make-A-Wish Alabama representatives are available upon request.

For every mile donated in Alabama, the national Make-A-Wish office will match, mile-for-mile, up to one million miles.

Because Make-A-Wish Alabama is a new independent chapter, this is the first “Wishes in Flight” campaign for the Alabama chapter.

For more information on the “Wishes in Flight” campaign and how to donate your unused air miles, visit, or call 205-254-WISH.
