On 08/31/2016 numerous concerned citizens called into the Dothan Police Department and reported a “Live” video stream on Facebook. James Terrance Allen of Chickasaw St in Dothan was shown on the live video pouring alcohol on a turtle and saying “give me 100 views and I’ll light it.”
James Allen then lit the turtle on fire. He continued this abuse of the turtle and upped his threats by saying “give me 200 views or this (expletive) is goanna die.” Dothan Police Officers located James Allen and took him into custody and transported him to the Dothan Police Department. James Terrance Allen charged with Aggravated Animal Cruelty. The turtle was located and taken to the Dothan Police Department Animal Services Division until transportation for rehabilitation can be arranged. The turtle, who has been named “Leonardo” is expected to make a full recovery and hopefully released back into the wild.
Update: We are working with the Alabama Game Wardens office to positively identify Leonardo as a gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) which are listed as "Threatened" in the Endangered Species Act and protected in Alabama.
