At approximately 11:13 a.m. deputies with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) responded to a 911 call at 441 Bear Head Road, DeFuniak Springs. The caller, Stephen Dewayne Kelly, 43, had barricaded himself in his home, claiming to have shot himself. He told communications officers that he did not want anyone to respond to his home and if they were sent, he would shoot them.
Deputies arrived on scene and set up a perimeter around the home. The communications officer speaking to Kelley on the phone was able to talk him into leaving his weapon in the home and to exit to speak to law enforcement. Upon exiting the home, Kelley saw the deputies were armed and made further threats to shoot and kill them. He then turned to re-enter the home when he was subdued. Deputies were able to assess Kelley for possible self-inflicted gun shot injuries and found there were none. Deputies located a shotgun inside the home and evidence the gun had been fired in the direction of the front door. He was transported to the Walton County Department of Corrections.
Kelley was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, Improper Exhibition of a Firearm, Using a Firearm Under the Influence of Alcohol, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, and Resisting an Officer without Violence.
